Extraction Breaks Azeotrope

This modular system separates toluene from acetic anhydride for a Southeast US pharmaceutical manufacturer. A packed distillation column using Koch-Glitsch Flexipac^TM generates a pure toluene product, removing the acetic anhydride overhead as a minimum boiling azeotrope. A packed liquid-liquid extractor filled with Koch-Glitsch SMVP^TM extraction packing is then used to recover acetic anhydride from the azeotrope. VLE Data for this system was generated by KMPS engineers, regressed and then used to model and optimize the process.
