Projects - Some Current Activities

KMPS has over 200 modular systems installed and operating. A few examples can be found on our Past Projects below plus some recent systems that KMPS has designed and fabricated:

  • Key modules of a commercial polysilicon production unit to a European customer in the 1st quarter of 2008 and a larger unit to a US customer in the 4th quarter of 2008. These units purify metallurgical grade silicon (MGS) to electronic grade silicon by hydrogenation of MGS and STC to make TCS. The resulting TCS is purified by crystallization and distillation. The European plant has successfully started up and is producing pure TCS.

  • Modular system to recover ethylenediamine from process waste stream using pressure swing distillation.

  • Several pilot scale demonstration units for alternative fuels projects.

  • Modular esterification reaction and distillation system for an oleochemical company.

  • Citrus oil distillation system for a flavor and fragrance manufacturer.

  • Modular system to remove ethylene oxide from a LDPE purge gas stream.

  • Modular system designed to continuously separate various refrigerant mixtures using extractive distillation.

  • Two large diameter KARR® Reciprocating Plate extraction columns in Korea, which are operating above expectations. These glass lined columns are performing a combination of a hydrolysis reaction and inorganic acid extraction using water as the solvent.

  • Two large diameter KARR® extraction columns in separate chemical plants in mainland China. One column is for extraction of Carboxylic Acid from an aqueous feed stream, the other for extraction of contaminants from an effluent caustic stream.

  • Large diameter SCHEIBEL® column designed for organic acid extraction for a specialty chemical manufacturer on the Gulf Coast.

Pharmaceutical Solvent Recovery, Azeotropic Distillation

This modular system is designed to operate in a semi-continuous mode to recover isopropyl alcohol (IPA), near it's azeotropic concentration, from an aqueous process stream generated in the production of a pharmaceutical. The system is subsequently operated in a continuous mode to dry the IPA, using azeotropic distillation with isopropyl ether as the entrainer.

PEG Steam Stripper

PEG Steam Stripper

This steam stripping system treats various organic laden aqueous wastes for a Midwest pharmaceutical producer in order to bring them into compliance with the pharmaceutical effluent guidelines (PEG). The column has Koch-Glitsch anti-fouling stripping trays and a short trayed  rectification section. All process equipment is fabricated in alloy C276 and process piping is PTFE lined.

High Vacuum Aroma Distillation

This modular distillation system separates two very close boiling compounds under reduced pressure for a Southeast US aroma chemical producer. The column was packed with 5 beds of Koch BXä wire gauze structured packing yielding 80 theoretical stages.

Oil Purification Through Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Oil Purification

Impurities are removed from recycled motor oils using a continuous countercurrent extraction process. The extraction step is followed by vacuum distillation to recover the extraction solvent. The entire process was pilot tested at Koch Modular Process Systems pilot plant in Houston, Texas. A SCHEIBEL® extractor was selected for this application.

Glycol Recovery

This modular ethylene glycol distillation system treats a waste stream from a US fiber producer removing low and high boiling impurities. The system employs a Turba-Film® thin film evaporator supplied by LCI Corporation to remove solids from the feed stock. The process technology was developed by Koch Modular Process Systems' engineers.

Methyl Ester Purification (Biodiesel)

KMPS designed and supplied a commercial biodiesel purification unit to a Midwest customer in 2003. The objective of this unit was to purify methyl esters by vacuum distillation from a crude biodiesel stream which includes impurities such as water, methanol, glycerin, mono-glycerides, di-glycerides, tri-glycerides and other high boilers. This plant has been successfully operating for over 7 years.

Melt Crystallizer

KMPS has recently completed construction of a modular Melt Crystallizer system for a Gulf Coast specialty chemical producer. The unit shown has been designed to separate 2 different mixtures, each containing 2 isomers which are not economically separated using distillation because the boiling points of the isomers are very close. The Melt Crystallizer shown was designed and supplied to KMPS by BEFS Prokem.

The entire train of reactors and distillation columns shown here were designed and fabricated as modular units by KMPS for a gulf coast specialty aromatics producer. The columns are packed with Koch-Glitsch FlexipacTM structured packings.

Phenol Recovery

This modular phenol recovery system treats wastewater for a US resin producer, reducing phenol concentrations to 1 ppm. It replaced a toluene extraction system. The new system employs butyl acetate for extraction, resulting in a 65% reduction of fugitive emissions and a thousand-fold reduction in phenol losses. The phenol recovery technology was developed by KMPS engineers.

As a result of utilizing modular design and fabrication techniques for this multipurpose batch and continuous vacuum distillation system, Koch Modular Process Systems was able to significantly reduce the installed cost and shorten the construction schedule for the expansion project of this specialty aroma chemicals manufacturer.

Pseudocumene Purification

The two vertical modules incorporate vacuum distillation, liquid-liquid extraction and nitrogen stripping columns for ultra-high purification of pseudocumene. KMPS initially provided a laboratory purification system and was later awarded the contract for the full scale system shown here.

MACT Stripper

MACT Stripper

Steam stripping is used to remove various organic contaminants from plant wastewater in order to meet guidelines for Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards set by the EPA. The organics and steam from the top of the column are then condensed and separated using a decanter. The condensed steam is refluxed to the top of the column.

Benzene Stripper

Benzene (VOC) contaminated waste-water is  stripped from 30 ppm to 0.5 ppm with a fuel gas that is subsequently sent to flare. The de-contaminated waste stream is then sent to the facilities waste treatment plant.
